So I finally get to finish this up and finish packing for my vacation. The session ended with questions and answers. I stayed for about 10 of them, so here are some highlights:

  • What can be done about motorcycle noise?
SPD has plans to identify problem areas and place officers to make stops. I suppose this sounds like speed traps, but I guess it's more like sound traps. Either way, I would watch out if you happen to have a motorcycle and you happen to be on Western and you happen to hate people that like to sleep. Council members are working on legislation that would make this issue more enforceable as well. If you care about this, talk to your council members and see this through.
  • Can the judiciary issue more SODA orders in Belltown?
We just have to ask for them. Bug the prosecutors and make sure this recommendation makes its way into the court process.
  • Why is there not more police action on 3rd through 4th between Blanchard and Bell?
The community needs to make it an issue. Read back to the first post where Thomas...

The last group of people to speak were representatives from the Seattle Superior Court.

Hon. Sharon Armstrong and Hon. Bruce W. Hilyer sat in on our meeting and then shared with us the court's role in this effort.

Judge Armstrong explained that the court's role was to apply the constitution and existing legislation to cases that come before them. They act as impartial 'referees', to borrow from her sports analogy.

She also described the process of determining probable cause and setting bail for each defendant. She went on to describe lots and lots of information about the court procedures and I suppose I checked out a little bit at this point.

Sorry. Check out your notes from senior year government class to learn more.

What was really cool was her invitation to the community to go watch cases at the Courthouse at 3rd and James on floor 12. There we can get involved and learn more about what they do.

It was kind of around this time that we started learning what Stay Out...

After the police got done addressing the audience, some more representatives from the prosecutor's office came to describe what happens after the arrests are made and how the community can be involved.

Dan Clark of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's office was up first to describe how he and his colleagues work to "come up with innovative ways to prosecute crimes." He shared with us his office' targeted approach on drug crimes.

As an anecdote, Seattle used to be 6th in the nation for car crimes, but has improved to 38th because the prosecuting office took a targeted approach. The same could work for our problems in Belltown.

Key points of Dan's speaking time included identifying and targeting people that are causing the drug market problems, as well as doing something to dry up the drug demand. This includes things like Drug Court programs and other alternatives to help people drop their dependency on drugs and eliminate the market for dealers.

Mary Barbosa from the Narcotics group within the prosecutor'...

Hi there folks. The following is a recap from my notes from last night's Belltown Safety forum. I'm sure you'll find really good coverage of the event in other blogs and news sites, but we here at Belltown People hope to be a part of helping those who live and work in Belltown engage their community by providing information and an opportunity to dialog with your neighbors. I guess that's what a neighborhood blog does, right? Hopefully 24 hours isn't horrible turnaround time. It turns out I have to go to work sometimes.

There were three main parts to this meeting: Police, Prosecution, and the Justice System. I am on a time constraint right now, so I'm going to jot down what the police had to say and I'll tackle the rest later tonight.

Belltown Citizens On Patrol and the Labor Temple hosted a forum for public officials and Belltown neighbors to get together to talk about safety. If you have been to any of the Bell Street Park meetings or any BCC meeting, this is generally a popular topic. BCOP generally tries to...

Jesse asked me to put something together regarding the imminent doom of the McGuire building at 2nd and Wall. The McGuire is my first and current home after moving to Seattle, so I think I can offer a perspective somewhat different from what you will read on the news or in other blogs. I suppose I can walk you through what my experience has been the last few days.

Friday 6:00 pm--Meeting Announcement Letter
I got home from work on Friday and found a rolled-up note in my door handle. This has been fairly common as the apartment managers keep us posted on various construction activities and other community events. However, this one was not from the McGuire staff but instead was from the engineering firm running the show on the investigatory work that had been going on for a few months. I might point out that the verbiage was consistently "investigatory" and "exploratory" work, so there was a long-standing indication they were looking for something.

The note stated that the firm had concluded their investigations...

Show Title: Trombones Bleu

Show Duration: February 12 – March 7, 2010

Matthew Kandegas exhibits his third and final solo show at Form/Space Atelier. Kandegas moved to Vaasa, Finland January 1, to join an intentional community of Suomi (Lapplanders) endeavoring to re-establish Suomi customs, language and culture in an urban milieu ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korsholm ). The community has built in the city a lichen farm, which, as fodder, will sustain a herd of caribou. Kandegas will retain representation by Form/Space Atelier at the request of his collectors located in Seattle, though as of press time, Kandegas was unable to say whether he would continue to create new paintings while in Finland, but said the move to Scandinavia was “permanent and irrevocable…”.

Matthew Kandegas has been described as a Post-Minimalist painter, his subjects have been figural in response to stadium rock, but in the last decade he has created only images of paperclips. Curator Paul Pauper discovered Kandegas during research for organizing...

Belltown: Its time to invest in the future of your neighborhood. Bring your Ideas to the Bell Street Park blvd Community Meeting tomorrow, Tuesday November 10 th, 2009. This is our neighborhood, so let’s own it.. Invest some interest in  this park and its capacity to help shape our community. Ask yourself what things would you like to see in this park? What ideas do you have that could increase visitors to the space (more people around=less shady activities)? What aspects of Seattle culture could be incorporated to make this space different than just a typical park?

Sure, we've all wondered while heading to the airport from Belltown. "What's going to happen if the "big one" strikes while I'm on this old excuse for a highway"? EliseSaidSo tipped me off to a new mega earthquake simulation released by WSDOT. Shock and awe, baby.

WSDOT is not an optimistic bunch.

In 2007 we released a report that concluded there is a higher chance – specifically, a one in 10 chance in the next 10 years – of an earthquake occurring that could cause portions of the viaduct and adjacent seawall to collapse. The vulnerability analysis is available on our Web site.

A simulation based on the 2007 report demonstrates how disastrous a strong earthquake could be for the Alaskan Way Viaduct. It shows what could happen if a seismic event more intense than the 2001 earthquake were to shake the Puget Sound region again. To say that the damage to the viaduct and the seawall would be severe would be an understatement.

The video is produced with a Hollywood flare. Most of the pier and seawall would slide into Elliot Bay. That's really bad news for the souvenir shops and Red Robin. The more horrific effect would be the immediate dismantling of the Viaduct. Watch the video and just imagine how hellacious that would be. Of course, the city spent a lot of money on this simulation to scare you. But, even the possibility of this happening should be enough. Whether you're rooting for McGinn or Mallahan (anti-tunnel or pro-tunnel) either solution should be aimed towards a replacement as soon as possible.

Perhaps you have heard of Restaurant.com?  They are known for offering discounted gift cards to local restaurants.  Often these gift cards can save you about 60% on food (and sometimes drinks) at your favorite venues.

Right now they have a special offer that is valid until September 13th at 9:00pm.  Use Coupon Code "NINETY" and get a $25.00 gift card for $1 or a $100 gift card for $4.

Like with all good things most restaurants exclude happy hour or alcohol and have a minimum amount ($35 dollar minimum for the $25 dollar gift card and $200 minimum for the $100 gift card) but those minimums can be easily reached.  Bottom line it's like a great coupon deal at some of your local restaurants!

There are 74 participating restaurants within 5 miles of 98121.  Check them out here!

We can all get “blocked”. We lose sight of what we want or how to achieve those dreams. Utilizing some basic creativity tools, you can revitalize your life and begin to uncover your inner dreams, aspirations, and hopes.

I was blocked.  I had trained and worked as a mental health therapist for years and while there was much about it I still enjoyed, I knew I needed a change.  However, the answer to the “Now what?” question eluded me.  I read the numerous self-help career books and while their suggestions often made sense, their sage advice seemed to fall flat when I tried to implement their 5, 6, or 8 point plans.

There was one last book collecting dust on my shelf that I intended to read but kept putting off:  The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron.  While I in no way saw myself as an artist, I had heard numerous testimonials from friends how it “wasn’t just for artists” and that it helped them uncover their own individual paths.  Finally, I got miserable enough and decided to dive...

Lately, it seems that the topic of Real Estate surfaces into every conversation that I've had with family and friends. So why not write about it. Sure its been talked about to death, everyone has their opinions. But at the same time, we are all still questioning if we should use that 8k tax credit and buy before November, or keep renting because the market will further decline. Where is the true bottom?  I don't know about you, but i like to make informed decisions by considering all points of view before I take my stance.  And at the same time, forming my opinions on facts...not feelings about what i think is going to happen.  So here are some articles that i've come across that have been helpful and/or interesting.  A few of these have  made the decision of even considering to  buy after my Belltown condo lease is up next month,  a more black and white decision.

The “Activate” tour includes four prisons in the Seattle area, and has included homeless shelters and refugee centers to raise money for a myriad of charities such as Mocha Club, an African aid organization, and Not For Sale, a sex trafficking organization for whom we sell products made by former sex slaves and thereby help keep them OUT of slavery.

From Amy Courts Bio

With the July 2008 release of the independent follow-up to her 2005 EP, THESE COLD AND RUSTED LUNGS, produced by Nelison Hubbard (Garrison Starr, Matthew Perryman Jones, Kate York, Matthew Ryan), Amy Courts shows with effortless fluency that she is indeed here to stay. With her trademark impassioned vocals, captivating melodies, and audacious honesty, she ably takes on love, heartache, spirituality, and personal demons. Though her voice and songs invoke inevitable comparisons to great singer-songwriters like Jennifer Knapp, Patty Griffin, and Derek Webb, her sound and experience are uniquely her own, and are delivered with a rare distinction.

Since making the move to Nashville in September 2003, Amy released a debut EP, took on marriage and step-motherhood, quit her day job, embarked on a full-time career in music, and became an artist sponsor with the African Aid organization, Mocha Club. In promotion of her music and Mocha Club sponsorship, she has performed hundreds of acoustic and full-band concerts across the nation, including four Major League Baseball and NASCAR National Anthem performances and an acoustic pre-game fan concert in the Summer of 2008 for hundreds of thousands of fans at the Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Motor Speedway, and Kansas City Royals. Additionally, her first two singles from THESE COLD AND RUSTED LUNGS - "Shiver" and "The Liars" - are currently playing in regular rotation on over 150 stations worldwide and have both reached #3 on CRW's Independent Radio Charts.

“The past five years have been a bit of a whirlwind,“ Amy notes. “As my life has expanded into marriage, step-motherhood, and lending my voice and passion to the incredible needs in Uganda, I’m constantly aware of the need to deliberately give myself to something bigger than me. Whether by giving my family an hour of time I might rather spend writing or resting, forgiving someone who hasn’t asked for it, being deliberate about spiritual quietness, or acting on my human responsibility to care for the fatherless and the widow simply because I am able, I’m continually challenged and inspired to reach beyond my own issues into a wider sphere and higher calling.”

And reach she does. As her life and passions have evolved, they have delivered Amy into a place of greater personal maturity and global understanding, which she explores in depth. Without becoming egocentric or self-indulgent, she dives into common human experiences with profound effect. In the rock ballads, “Hold You Up” and “Company,” Amy expresses that despite hurt, frustration, and time spent apart in marriage, committed, unconditional love is the end-all. Paradoxically, “Inevitable” and “I Told You So” relate to the harsher sides of romance, when efforts are exhausted and love isn’t quite enough.

The more personal memoirs of “The Liars” and “Barely Breathing” show Amy fighting the inner demons of fear and disillusionment that invariably accompany spiritual drought. And still, she draws the focus back to ultimate hope with “Nothing Better” and “In You.”

Though undeniably heavy and occasionally dark, Amy’s message music is ultimately a declaration of abandoned hope and a call to greater personal action. Where other artists skim the surface or sit comfortably in the realms of musical interest alone, Amy digs deep and gives generously from those depths. Whether through her on-stage performance, or in her daily passion for global and local social justice, Amy makes an indelible mark on everyone she meets.

Press Quotes

Sue Kline | Discipleship Journal | September/October 2008 Print Edition (pg.14, on These Cold and Rusted Lungs): “In Amy Courts’ first full-length release, I hear echoes of King David crying, ‘Lord, why won’t You answer me?’ or the Apostle Paul moaning, ‘What’s wrong with me? I want to do right, but I don’t.’ With raw honesty, Courts pens and sings melodic rock ballads (and an acappella hymn) about the desperate seasons of the Christian journey. Yet light always peeks through, leading us to proclaim, ‘In Your shelter wounds are mended, stirring hope in what remains’ (from “In You”). These Cold and Rusted Lungs gives us a language for baring our souls to God and pleading for His solace.”

Matt Conner | CCM Magazine | Full Review: (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs): “[Amy is] A female Derek Webb. …Courts’ debut LP, These Cold and Rusted Lungs, is absolutely inventive within its singer/songwriter scope, polished even in its vulnerability.”

Chris Unthank | The Bridge | Full Review: (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs): “Courts’ songwriting reflects her songs in a more poetic nature - not unlike the songwriting of Christian music’s prized songwriters like Sara Groves or Cindy Morgan. …These Cold & Rusted Lungs should surely give Courts the attention she deserves.” Christa Banister | Christianity Today | Full Review: (On These Cold and Rusted Lungs):"Courts' reflections on the tough times are never self-indulgent, but rather honest reflections on humanity that simply remind us again just how much we really need God in the first place."Mariah Seacrest | Wrecked for the Ordinary | Full Review: (On These Cold and Rusted Lungs) "Amy Courts is one of those musicians whose songs you can put on repeat, and hours later still be enjoying the tunes like you were playing them for the first time. Amy’s voice swells with a ringing resonance, spreading out to the most delicate of edges—a perfect contrast of power and intricacy. Her sweetly ornamented stylings add a tinge of silver lining to the shadowy undercurrents of melancholy underneath." C.E. Moore | The Christian Manifesto | Full Review: (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs): "Courts is a polished and seasoned singer who has been around the block and seems to be settling into who she is an artist with her newest offering."

Randy Brandt | Al Menconi Ministries | Full Review: (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs): "Amy Courts continues to forge a path influenced by artists like Jennifer Knapp, Patty Griffin and Jonatha Brooke, but the end result is uniquely hers, a refreshingly authentic statement in a plastic world overrun with trite lyrics....These Cold and Rusted Lungs [is] a tour de force of the singer/songwriter genre."

Bruce von Stiers | BSV Reviews | Full Review: (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs): "If you were to only pick one Christian music album to add to your collection this year, then These Cold And Rusted Lungs should be it. Amy’s faith shines through the lyrics on the songs and her vocals are beyond wonderful. Add to her voice the wonderful keyboard and guitar playing and you get a multi-faceted faith based artist."

JT Indie | Full Review: (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs):

"The music was a great comfort and Amy’s Voice is something that gets inside you, past all the walls and scars of the years....Amy is a Vocal Poet. Her turn of phrase and choice of words paints mental pictures that are clear and rich in detail. This is an album that I will no doubt pull out and listen to for the pleasure of the music, but it is also an album I will pull out and listen to for the message and the comfort it brings."

Into the Hill | Full Review: (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs): “Like most of us, though we are usually too inept or afraid to say so, she found doubt, lies, prayer, God, the joy and incessancy of her own breath, some darkness; and she found light, faith, hope, and love, all fast-bound and steady, anchored in the deeper waters of her inner truth…With Amy, above all, I enjoy the reach. I appreciate the gall to dig into self and expose what is there, good or bad, right or wrong, rusted lungs, mud puddle, peace.”

Bob Felberg | The Phantom Tollbooth | Full Review: (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs): “In her first full length album, These Cold and Rusted Lungs, Amy Courts sounds frail, frustrated and vulnerable. She takes on massive subjects like love, heartbreak, personal demons, and the concept of a Holy yet still personal God. …But she is up to her monumental, unsettling task.”

RE:gard | Full Review: (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs): "Clearly someone has got it figured out, because they produce the most staggering melodies. Courts's (independently released) sophomore album These Cold and Rusted Lungs is brimming with honesty....I've always been a bit jealous of throaty voices. They make you want to care about them. I've heard two songs & I already care."

Lo-Fi Tribe | Full Review: (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs): "Amy is obviously gifted, versatile, and at all times passionate and honest. Every track is a dive into human experience, spiritual frailty, and a thirsty search for God. In a world of over-produced Christian pop, and corny Jesus songs, Amy Courts’ These Cold And Rusted Lungs is a godsend. It is better than most sermons. It is that good."

The Good Flea | Full Review: (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs): "I listened to this album once, maybe twice, before it became like my tye-dyed turtleneck. Soft, comfortable, earthy, deep colors, begging to be worn often. I like it. Liked it right off."

The Blah Blah | Full Review: (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs):"You can hear people crying and praying and searching for God in her songs, and you feel better knowing you’re not the only one who’s felt that way. And in the midst of it all you know there’s light coming, because no matter how much you doubt, you still know God is good."

Mark Hollingsworth | Former manager for Petra, Sixpence None the Richer, Smalltown Poets, and Steve Taylor: "Amy's expressive longings accented with her husband Paul Koopman's guitar figures (reminiscent of Lindsay Buckingham) and then combined with a lament that we can all relae to at time in our faith journey make for a powerful concoction ...Her music doesn't insult the intelligence of her listeners. No cliches, no pablum. It presumes the listeners think deeply and are yearning for something that help them as they explore those inner feelings."

Andrew Greenhalgh | Content Editor, Soul-Audio.com (on "The Liars"): "Be sure to check out our latest feature download, 'The Liars,' from singer-songwriter Amy Courts. Taken from Courts’ first LP, These Cold and Rusted Lungs...this track showcases the artist’s more than capable vocals and a bare-bones honesty within the songwriting."

Matt Conner | Editor-in-Chief, Soul-Audio.com (on These Cold and Rusted Lungs): "I absolutely love this debut and think it’s one of the year’s best thus far - honest, simple tunes that are allowed to be what they are without having to add any pop radio flair to them."

Dave Koch | Publisher & Editor, Christian Radio Weekly: "Amy's music addresses real life issues in a powerful expression of passion and love for those less fortunate in our world."

Hit up Roq La Rue Gallery on 1st & Bell for the opening reception of Nicoletta Ceccoli and Eric Fortune.

6-9pm

music by DJ Vodka Twist/ Beverages provided

Italian artist Nicoletta Ceccoli returns to the gallery with a new series of work entitled “Beauties and Beasts”, exploring themes of childhood innocence and the loss of that innocence, as well as exploring the idea of isolation caused by a creative life.

Eric Fortune has a mini-solo show entitled “Daughters of Our Nature.” Four paintings depict female subjects as emotionally resonant metaphors. Eric uses washed hues and natural tones that create, on one level, a feeling of serenity -- one that contrasts with the often dynamic nature of his imagery.
