Along with a few friends, I was invited to attend the “pre-soft opening” of The Upstairs this past Monday evening. Opened by the same owner of the Belltown tapas restaurant, Pintxo, The Upstairs features craft cocktails, an impressive beer selection (including many great microbrews) and a handpicked wine list.
After climbing the stairs, you will find yourself in a foyer with many doors, and it might feel like you’re in an apartment building, instead of a bar. Though, after a quick glance, it’s obvious which door leads to the bar. Open the door, and you’ll feel as if you have entered a different world.
With a capacity of 49, the two room space is quaint and comfortable. The building is quite old (early 1900′s) and has original exposed brick and gorgeous (maybe original?) wood floors. In addition, photos, paintings and art installations by local artists adorn the walls.
The Upstairs is drinks only, but that’s what they do best. Many cocktails on the list are classics or takes on the old classics. I tried the “Bees Knees” (gin, honey, lemon juice) and a Southern Comfort punch with citrus that was refreshing and delicious.
The Upstairs does have a daily happy hour from 5-7pm. In addition, during the soft opening the hours are Tuesday – Sunday 5pm-2am. Yes, they are closed Monday.
I have a feeling we’ll be hearing a lot more about this place in the days to come.
The Upstairs is located at 2209 2nd Avenue, between Blanchard and Bell. Those of you that have been in Belltown awhile might know the space as the former McLeod Residence.
